Happy New Year….?

new-years-eve-1036513_1280

With just 8 days into the New Year, I can say that I have already had a number of challenges that threatened to break my ‘let’s look on the bright side of life’. I was then reminded by a friend that we should view life and those that participate in it, like a garden, where each individual is different and plays their own unique role, including the ‘macka bush’. Just because you are unsure of their purpose does not negate the fact that they too have a role to play and your coming across them is a lesson for you both to learn.

Letting go…

There are points in our lives when it is essential that we let go….of our fear, our guilt, our shame, our past, our disappointment, all those negative feelings in order to move forward and continue on our journey towards…for me its happiness and being the best me that I can be.

Gratitude…

Flowers for You by G

I’ve been thinking about gratitude and blogging about my experience while in Jamaica and now that I sit to write, I’m at a complete standstill. Yesterday I was so worked up about the ingratitude that I saw around me. Yet now…I wonder about the points that I wanted to make and if I was simply being super sensitive or worse having expectations of others that were unfair…

How does one learn to be grateful for the life we live and the experiences we have? Having grown up in two cultures and sharing my life experiences between the UK and Jamaica…I’ve noticed gratitude and ingratitude in both places and in all age groups. Have you ever gotten on a London bus and given up your seat for someone without even a ‘thank you’ being uttered. Or held open a door in Kingston and have the person barge past without batting an eyelid?

Smile Jamaica Smile….

Smile Jamaica...8th June 2015

Smile Jamaica…8th June 2015

Have you ever had a goal that you never really thought would be possible to accomplish or knew where to start yet decided to put it down anyway because it was something you wanted to achieve. For me being on national television three times in a year, was one of those goals. Well six months into the year and I managed to achieve it…still not sure how.  Read the rest of this entry »

Rushed off my feet….barely time to smell the roses!!

Flowers by G

Is it just me who loves being rushed off their feet? Well sometimes…I must admit that I get super excited about all the things that I have to do at the moment, especially as they are all so different.

Yes I am slightly annoyed that because things got so hectic I was unable to post when I had planned…these things do happen. What’s important is to put contingencies in place that actually work and form a routine that promotes your productivity. Even the best laid plans…be adaptable or build extra time into your schedule, to ensure that you get the most out of your day. Read the rest of this entry »

How long is the journey to the Stars…..?

Whenever we think about our dreams or those oh so distant goals we can lose hope or simply forget the reasons they were dreams in the first place. Dreams sometimes fade because we get bogged down in the day to day things…the challenges that we face each week make us take our eye of our prize. Sometimes things are just too hard…the dream too impossible.

Truth is we are the or tend to me the greatest barriers to achieving our dreams.

…back to coaching!!

IMG_3956

In order to make our dreams a reality it is so important to take that first step no matter how challenging it may seem. For many of us the first step is the most difficult and often the one we never take. Our dreams become fairytales instead of our reality.

Those dreams that get shelved, the goals that are never completed or the targets left undone are the ones that we either don’t really want or sometimes the ones that we secretly want the most but are too afraid to go after. Sound confusing?

With dreams, goals or targets there are those that we know are attainable, those that we can see actually happening and those that seem so far away or too out of our reach due to circumstance, knowledge base, finances or time that we let them fade into the background or disappear forever.

The truth is, any dream, goal or target is achievable. We just have to find the right path and in order to do so, it is important to be aware of what it is we really want. It’s about being committed to what we want and recognising the value that we place on the goals that we have.

Do you really want to be a millionaire? Do you really want to have blond hair? If yes, what do these things give you? How do they make you feel? What happens if you don’t achieve them?

When looking at any dream, goal or target it is essential that you look closely at it, not just what you need to do to get it or what you need to give up for it but (I know, I’m using the “but” word) what it represents to you? How will achieving this goal make you feel? How will you be able to tell when you’ve achieved it?

Due to my personality time (I’m a strong S with some I and C in the DISC profiling system), security is a high priority for me and an important goal. Now the word security can and does imply many things. In the world of work, it meant having my own space, including desk / office and knowing where I was going and how I fit into the development of the company that I worked for…so setting up Dragonfly Pathways, was me stepping out of my comfort zone and giving up my ‘security’ for a dream.

What I realised was, that although I had two seemingly conflicting goals, wanting to be my own boss and having the security of a regular pay cheque, I needed to really look at what I wanted to achieve, what was important to me and essential to my happiness and well being. My goals could have cancelled each other out and I could have stayed in my job.

While developing my coaching skills and working with other coaches in the UK, I realised that these goals, leaving the safety and security of full time employment for the “unknown world” and being my own boss needn’t be on opposing sides. I simply had to be honest with myself and look at what I really wanted and see if my goals lined up with each other. And in truth, they did. I also became aware that my need to be my own boss and set my own deadlines was more important than that initial need for my ‘own space’ – I did get an office space very quickly though….

Are there dreams that you want to turn into reality? Are there things that you want to change yet haven’t been able to? What’s holding you back?

Next week, time and date to be confirmed I will be offering one reader the chance to have a series of 30 minute coaching sessions for free…for those interested please contact us at info@dragonflypathways.com

The reader will be chosen at random.

Have a great and productive week and remember, keep dreaming!!

Easter (delayed post)

As a Christian, Easter is an extremely important time of year for me, I love Christmas, the excitement, the time with family and ok, my birthday. For me however, Easter signifies a time of faith and true celebration, for He lives…Jesus lives.

This Easter was a more emotional one for a number of reasons. My Jamaican grandparents were both born on the 1st April and this year was the first year since my grandfather’s passing last year, that my grandmother celebrated it by herself since they met over 70 years ago. It is also the first Easter since my British grandmother’s passing earlier this year. Even though they have passed they were both Christians, which has been a real comfort to the family.

So what does coaching have to do with Easter? The connection is about accepting change, being willing to see obstacles as opportunities and “accepting the things that we cannot change, having the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference” – an edited version of the Serenity Prayer.

Unexpected Challenges

So this week, I’m writing you from my mobile phone as my computer is being repaired…an unexpected challenge.

The beauty of the unexpected challenge is that it makes things a little more interesting and forces us to look outside the box or step out of our comfort zone. It also brings with it the chance to revisit our goals. I must admit that I am a firm believer in goal checking. For me, the ones that I don’t check are the ones that don’t get accomplished…maybe I haven’t put in enough steps or maybe it’s no longer a goal I desire or maybe I’m not taking the time needed to make it happen or worse maybe I’m not giving myself credit for the steps that I’m accomplishing.

Last week, I talked about it being “Just one of those days…” this week has certainly come with its own set of challenges. However it’s these challenges that make life worth living, these challenges that remind us of who we are and what we’re made of.  Read the rest of this entry »

“Just one of those days…Just one of those days”

Have you ever had a line of a song stick with you? The sound resonating in someway with how you were feeling or the mood you were in?  I’m not sure where I was the first time that I heard Sizzla’s song “Just one of those days” and I must admit that I just looked up the lyrics because I could only remember the feeling that seemed to emanate from those words: “Just one of those days, just one of those days“.

Well it’s been one of those weeks, you know the ones when you’re learning those lessons that you could really do without? Those moments when you look around and begin to evaluate where you are and what you’re doing?

This week held a lot of that for me and if Im being honest, I am my biggest critic and probably harsher on myself than anyone else would be.

For me, these days or weeks, when I reflect on where I am, even when I get a little overwhelmed or feel a little bit down, they are important for me. It’s these types of days that help me to stay grounded and allow me the opportunity to re-prioritise what I want to accomplish.

I tend to be a silver lining girl, which can be annoying for some. However its during these moments of stillness, I revert to my ‘Eeyore’ state – for those that don’t know who Eeyore is, he is the gloomy, depressed, no silver lining here, old donkey that’s friends with Winnie-the-Pooh and totally loveable!! It’s in these moments that I take stock of what I’ve accomplished and where I want to go. For many, Eeyore was only that sad old donkey, for me growing up, Eeyore represented so much more. For in those moments of quiet and self reflection, we realise that “weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them” ~ Eeyore (A. A. Milne)

So even in those moments, when its “just one of those days…” we have the ability to “…keep looking for sunshine” ~ Eeyore. Take that moment to recharge and refocus, remembering to squash those ANTS (automatic negative thoughts) and congratulate yourself on what you’ve accomplished. I bet if you wrote a list of all that you accomplished this week, you’d be pleasantly surprised.

Have a great week and remember, each day brings new opportunities…will you make use of them?
